Since completing a top to bottom renovation of the hotel in the spring of 2008, we have implemented a wide variety of innovative eco-measures that reduce energy and water consumption and waste production. We have installed energy efficient heat pumps with infrared Energy Management System to reduce energy use in unoccupied rooms, collect rainwater for irrigation with a rain barrel and compost all food waste and flatware in order to send less waste to landfills. But you don't need to sacrifice comfort or convenience to be conservation-minded on the road. Here are some tips to make your traveling more enjoyable and earth friendly.

LEAVING HOME

• If you're driving, make sure your car is well tuned and tires are fully inflated. You'll increase your mileage and cut gas costs up to 15%.
• Pack a canvas bag. You won't need a disposable paper or plastic bag with every purchase.

IN YOUR HOTEL ROOM

• Turn off your lights, television, and air conditioner when not needed.
• Never use your toilet for trash disposal.
• Ask your room attendant to let you reuse your linens and towels to reduce water, energy and detergent waste.

DINING OUT

• Seek out local and organic foods. They taste better, are better for you and will give you a flavor of the local culture.
• Taking out? Grab only the condiments, napkins and utensils you need. Try skipping the straw altogether.

GETTING OUT

• Plan your day's route using public transportation.
• Walk to nearby destinations for fresh air, to stretch your legs and to take in the local sights and sounds.

ECO-ACTIVITIES

• Experience the natural surroundings. Rent a bike or sailboat. Visit a local waterfront, park or aquarium.
• "Leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but photographs" and recycle or reuse the plastic film containers.
